Gilham CC is a church offers Good Friday Service. Good Friday is a bittersweet beginning to the Easter Weekend. Our service begins a 6:00 and closes at 7:00ish. It is a quiet, solemn service with scripture reading, hymn singing and time to quietly contemplate what our Savior willingly did for us. Communion will be offered at the close of the service. The scripture reading will be a compilation of the description of Jesus’ crucifixion from the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. There are two perspectives you may have regarding Good Friday.
A Believers Perspective:
When all believers, no matter the denomination they belong to, read the horrible, tortuous death Jesus willingly went through for the remission of our sins, while we were still sinners, just plain amaze us. There are so many moments that just leave me stunned! Just think if we knew that crucifixion awaited us, would we calmly say Grace for the meal, converse with our friends, wash their feet, let the one who was to betray us to the cross leave to do so, and sing hymns on the way to the place of betrayal. And there’s more!! Allow ourselves to be arrested, not answer the false charges we were arrested for, even to the governor, and not stop the proceedings even though we could ask our Father for legions of angels to stop it all!
And once nailed to the cross, would we really ask the Father to forgive those who not only put us there but hurl insults at us while we hung there?
A Nonbelievers Perspective:
You probably will admit that Jesus was a historical figure as most atheists’ agree that there is irrefutable proof that he existed, but don’t believe He was the Son of God. CS Lewis said from his book Mere Christianity.
“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him [that is, Christ]: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic–on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg–or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse…. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
